Dissertation Year Grants
Application Deadline: January 11

The HTI will award six (6) one-year dissertation fellowships
per year throughout the life of the program to applicants who are
ABD (All But Dissertation). Each award will be for an average of
$16,000 for a period of one academic year. It is expected that the
applicant completes his/her dissertation at the end of the award
year. This grant is not renewable and cannot be extended beyond
the designated award year.
In addition to monetary support to help the awardee
devote as much time as possible to writing, the HTI will also provide
the dissertation year awardee with:
- Skilled editorial support in order to facilitate a timely completion
of the dissertation.
- A mid-year workshop to monitor and encourage the writing process,
to provide a time for discussion of dissertation, and to provide
collegial support.
Qualifications
- Recommendations by professors giving witness to the applicant's
potential to contribute to the academic community as a scholar.
- Recommendations by Latino church/community leaders giving witness
to the applicant's commitment and leadership to the Latino community.
- The potential of the applicant to contribute to the academic
community as demonstrated by the dissertation proposal.
- The ability of the applicant to articulate the relevance of
the applicant's research to the United States or Canada Latino community/reality.
Other Criteria
Applicants must be citizens of the United States of
America or Canada, or Legal Immigrants (Aliens admitted in the country as lawful
permanent residents). Please be advised that Student Visa is considered

Applicants must be in a school accredited by an agency
recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation, http://www.chea.org.
Applicants should address important critical issues
of their disciplines in an analytical, interpretive, or theoretical
manner.
Applicants who plan to study in Latin America or Europe
are not eligible for scholarship grants.
Application Procedure
Applicants must include:

- A completed HTI application. (To download the application form
as a PDF document (357k file), click on the image to the right.
The PDF application form is interactive, allowing it to be completed
on a computer and then printed for submission. To view the application
form, you need to have the Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your
computer. If you do not have this application already, you may

at the bottom of this page.)
- A one-page vita which highlights your academic, church, and
community related activities and accomplishments.
- Copy of dissertation proposal which should have been approved
by the institution's Committee on Degrees or equivalent oversight
committee.
- Proposed time-line for writing which should clearly explain
expected progress of the dissertation chapters in the one-year
grant period.
- Official proof of ABD status from institution to be sent directly
to the HTI office.
- List of publications in print.
- Letter from the applicant's dissertation advisor attesting to
the feasibility of the time-line submitted to the HTI and stating
the academic contribution of the applicant's dissertation. To
be sent directly to HTI by your advisor. The deadline to receive
this letter is December 15.
- Letters of reference from two (2) leaders within the Latino
church/community. These letters should stress your involvement
with the Latino community as a theological/religious leader. To
be sent directly to the HTI by the leaders. The deadline to receive
these letters is December 15.
NOTE: If you have not been part of the HTI program in the
past, you need to submit official transcripts from colleges, seminaries,
and/or universities attended. To be sent directly to the HTI by
the school. The deadline to receive these transcripts is December
31.
To facilitate the processing of your application, you MUST send
items 1-5 on unstapled, unfolded, standard (8.5" x 11")
paper. Print should be dark and crisp for copying. Applications
not received in this manner will not be processed.
