HTI Dissertation Series Award

As part of HTI's interest in securing the future of our scholars, HTI has established a full and equal partnership with the University of Scranton Press, a publisher affiliated with the Consortium of Jesuit University Presses, concerning a series of books to be published about the religious experience of U.S. Latinas and Latinos. It is conceived as an interdisciplinary and ecumenical publication project.

Goals

  • Provide Latino/a junior scholars with a venue for publishing work on the religion of U.S. Hispanics
  • Highlight our awardees' work
  • Strengthen prospective of tenure
  • Encourage scholarly reflection on the religious experience of U.S. Hispanics
  • Disseminate that knowledge

Applications should be submitted to the Hispanic Theological Initiative with the dissertation by January 20th of each year.

Judging

Manuscripts will be evaluated for originality, scholarly acumen, timeliness, lucidity of expression, and contribution to the field of US Hispanic studies. Decisions of the HTI Dissertation Selection Committee are final and will be rendered and communicated to all applicants by May. Family members of the current HTI Selection Committee are disqualified from applying.

The winner of this annual contest will be guaranteed publication by the University of Scranton Press in Scranton, PA as part of the Hispanic Theological Initiative Dissertation Series. All applicants agree that if their dissertation is chosen, they will publish the chosen dissertation through the University of Scranton press following that press' author guidelines for that series.

Application Procedure

  • Applications can be downloaded or requested through HTI. To download the application form as a PDF document (212k file), click on the image to the right. The PDF application form is interactive, allowing it to be completed on a computer and then printed for submission. To view the application form, you need to have the Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer. If you do not have this application already, you may download it, free, by clicking on the Get Acrobat Reader button at the bottom of this page.
  • Send us your application, a diskette with the dissertation, submitted in Microsoft Word 6.0 or lower, and one hard copy no later than December 20. (Also, let us know if you would like the materials returned, should your dissertation not be awarded. Please note that you may re-enter your dissertation at another time or that , while it may not receive the HTI award, it may still be considered by U of Scranton Press for publication in the series.)

NOTE: The dissertation or book manuscript must not have been published and must not be under contract with any other press.
